I created this file folder game as a review for 2nd and 3rd graders also as enrichment for advanced 1st graders.  It can also be used in math centers or for small group instruction.
It is available in the link below.

It is the 3rd week of July and here in Georgia we are preparing to go back to school NEXT WEEK.  Currently I am working on my room and will have before and after pictures coming soon.  I would like to share a space theme I created for my classroom last school term.  All the students LOVED the new look of the lab.
The planets were a labor of love drawn on cardboard and hand painted.  They are hanging from the ceiling with the use of fishing line and paper clips.

This took a week to complete but if you have helpers it can be done in a day or two.  The rockets on the computers terminals were $1.99 (2 packs) from Hobby Lobby.  I used markers and paint to decorate them.  The rocket and planet stickers on the door were also purchased from Hobby Lobby (I do not remember the price but they were not expensive) as well as the silver border. The stars were $1.00 from my local Dollar Tree Store.
Hello!

It's been awhile (2yrs) since my last post.  A lot has happened in that time (1) GRADUATED, (2) Took a teaching position, (3) Began work on my Master's degree.  I have so much to share and will update frequently.  Thank you so much for coming by the Lesson Plan Corner!

Awesome activities for your first day of school

It's almost time for the school year to begin. Here are a few "getting to know you" ideas to break the ice during that first week.

Me Poster

(This is a take home activity, caregivers can assist) Posters will be given out at student orientation and on the first day of school. All posters must be returned on the following Thursday and shared on Friday.

Directions

This is an activity to help the class get to know each other. Students will receive an 8 X 10 poster (white paper, or construction paper), and can use any materials (crayons, makers, glitter, stickers, pictures, etc) to express the things they like, and what makes them special on their poster. The poster must include a picture of student (drawn or photo) and student’s name. The students will share their poster with the class during carpet time. All posters will be displayed throughout the classroom.

Getting to Know You (Teacher Introduction)
This short animated intro is a great ice breaker on that first day of class. Students can have an open discussion about similarities and differences they share with their classmates and teacher. For younger students, have them draw a picture of something or place to go.  Click on the link below and browse

Book of the Week June 11-17

This week's children's pick is My Brother Charlie, by Holly Robinson Peete & Ryan Elizabeth Peete. Illustrations are by Shane W. Evans. Charlie has autism. There are alot of things that he can't do, but his sister can tell you all the wonderful things he can, like playing the piano, knowing the names of the American presidents, and knowing things about airplanes. This picture book is a great read for K-3rd grade.

Junior Fiction/Young Adult Pick

This week's junior fiction pick is Becoming Naomi Leon, by Pam Munoz Ryan. Mexican-American, Naomi Leon is great at making list, worrying, and soap cravings. She and her younger brother Owen, have been living with their great-grandmother Mary Outlaw (Gram). Thus, giving Naomi the "funniest last name in the universe." When Naomi's mother pops back into their lives things are shaken up in the worse way. In order to save her family, Naomi goes on a journey to Mexico in search of her father. The award winning book is a great read for students with a lexile between 730 & 880. (Grades 6+)

Book of the Week June 4th

My children's pick is a new twist to an old favorite, "The Little Red Hen". This version of the childhood classic is hilarious. The illustrations are wonderfully done by Barry Downard. I read this book to a Pre-K class and they loved it. Young readers will get a kick out of the story as well as illustrations. Some suggestions to expand upon the story are:
-Students could make a mini book of the story and re-tell it to the class.
-Students could pick a character and re-tell the story from their point of view.
-Class discussion on sharing and teamwork.
You can find "The Little Red Hen" illustrated by Barry Downard at your local library.

Children's Book of the Week

 Teen Pick

My young adult pick is "The Serpent's Shadow" by Rick Riordan. This book is the final installment in the Red Pyramid Series. In The Serpent's Shadow we follow Sadie and Carter Kane on an action packed adventure to save the world from Chaos. With the help of ancient Egyptian Gods, Brooklyn House, an ape, and an albino crocodile, can the Kanes once again save the world? All will be revealed in Rick Riordan's "The Serpent's Shadow".
